39-Year Resident Begs for Safety From Airbnbs

“We should not have to live like that. And I thank all of you for all the hard work that you do in this city... We just want to be safe and we want to enjoy our last days in a place that we call home.”

— Annette Wideman, 39-year College Park resident

Long-time resident pleads with council as illegal short-term rentals bring strangers who 'jump out' at neighbors

Meeting Briefing

The April 20th council meeting turned into a reckoning over illegal short-term rentals plaguing College Park neighborhoods. Desperate residents testified about drug houses, all-night parties, and strangers driving across their yards while council members admitted they didn't even know how the agenda items appeared. Council unanimously voted to immediately enforce shutdowns of illegal Airbnbs and make rent-by-room housing illegal citywide, while also approving $31,500 in neurodivergent playground equipment and raising city manager spending limits to $25,000. The meeting exposed a city struggling to enforce its own laws while residents suffer the consequences.
